Izumiyama Quarry

Disputably the most important place in town, this quarry is where de Korean potter Ri Sampei 400 years ago found the right material to start the production of the beautiful Arita porcelain, that would become known all over the world. This quarry has been designated as an important historical site and is the starting point of Japanese porcelain production. 

Nearby you can find the monument for Arita's first potters and the Arita folk and history museum. 

Touzan Shrine &

Ri Sampei Memorial

This shrine which is dedicated to the Korean potter Ri Sampei should definitely be on your list of things to see in the town of Arita. Its porcelain torii-gate, and other porcelain decorations make this shrine unique and one of a kind. Climbing the path up the hill behind the shrine will take you to the memorial of Ri Sampei and will treat you to a superb view over the town of Arita.
